ARTIST: Franz Ferdinand

ALBUM TITLE: Untitled

BACKGROUND: This British promo EP sampler was released just 1 year after Franz Ferdinand’s eponymous debut album (which debuted on the UK album charts at number three, and won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize). The audio CD was given away with Observer Music Monthly (4th picture for information purposes only – the magazine is NOT sold here). It was intended to draw attention to their hotly anticipated second album ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’ (as detailed on the rear of the mini-album’s sleeve).

There was a commercial for this CD which showed the band as SD characters (‘Super Deformed’ or ‘chibi’ child-like Japanese style figures). This appeared on the likes of MTV, Channel 4’s 4Music (formerly 4Play) and The Box Television Network (Q, Kerrang!, NME TV). This was one of a short series of ads in the same style directed by Smith & Foulkes (others included ‘Abba to Zappa’). The Franz Ferdinand one can be viewed here: http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/tvfilm/2108

This was the beginning of the band’s flirtation with the cartoon imagery (in the Observer they were interviewed by the surreal cartoonist David Shrigley who also drew them; Do You Want To was used at the ending of the Japanese Anime ‘Paradise Kiss’; AND they have been drawn in an SD style for some concert flyers/magazine articles since). A few months later Franz Ferdinand were to appear in the Observer Music Monthly again. This time as cover stars interviewing the cult ‘virtual band’ Gorillaz. For details of this superb feature see: http://gorillaz-news.livejournal.com/116347.html Other than the examples above Franz Ferdinand have steadfastly stuck with their use of Russian avant-garde imagery NB. Their cover-art also frequently utilises an oblique 30% angle to give their identity continuity (as on the cover and disc for sale here, which is near identical to that found coming out of the girl's mouth on the 'You Could Have It So Much Better' album that it promotes).

STYLE OF MUSIC / GENRE: Indie rock, post-punk revival, art rock, New Wave, acoustic, alternative music.

TRACKLIST (followed by approximate running time of each song):
1. The Dark Of The Matinée
2. You're The Reason I'm Leaving
3. Walk Away (Acoustic)
4. You Could Have It So Much Better
5. Van Tango
NB. All tracks performed by Franz Ferdinand.

FORMAT: CD promo album in illustrated card case (as pictured).
